A computer virus is a self-replicating computer program usually capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same computer. With knowledge and common sense you can reduce the chances of computer virus infection.

Other types:

  • Computer worm:
    • A self-replicating computer program that uses networks to send copies of itself to other computers.
  • Trojan horse:
    • A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application.
    • Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves, but they can be just as destructive.
  • Spyware:
    • A computer software that obtains information from a user's computer without the user's knowledge.
    • They spread when downloading software from the internet.

Virus effect:

Viruses effects vary according to what the virus was designed for, but it may cause:

  • File corruption.
  • Program & operating system failure.
  • Start unwanted programs.
  • Slowing down the computer
  • Data theft
  • Annoyance

Be Aware

If you feel that your computer is infected with a virus, disconnect the internet, shut the computer down & seek help.

DO:

  • Use antivirus & anti spyware programs.
  • Update security programs periodically.
  • Scan removable media for viruses before opening any file.

DON'T:

  • Don’t participate in virus distribution.
  • Do not open any email attachment without knowing the sender.
  • Don’t use unsolicited programs and internet's free stuff scams.
